What is a pda battery?

When pda batteries are used, the users use them in varied conditions. The pda battery starts by supplying few milli amperes to your pda unit, just to maintain the memory in the device, so that it does not get erased. You can leave your pda in this state for days, without much affect to the battery. When you switch on your pda, the current drawn from your pda battery goes up to about or little more than 100 to 200 mill amperes, depending upon the kind of pda that you have. The unit would draws more current if you are using your back light to light up the screen. With some pda this current goes up to 400 mill amperes. Therefore, to conserve energy you need to use only the essentials, shutting off the other high current features. Your pda has power inverters built-in, which is used to provide a 5 volt supply when you add a PC card to the unit. This conversion of voltage is done from the output voltage of your pda battery.

How do you take care of your pda battery?

Your pda battery needs to be discharged fully before recharging each time. Most of us do not practice this in real and hence, the batteries with memory effect, do not get charged fully. If you leave your pda overnight plugged into the main power supply, the battery gets trickle charged, and over a period of time the pda battery gets damaged. The battery units have not been designed to be constantly charged for a long time, and if done, they lose their life time operation. Before you recharge the battery, it is good practice to run your pda device so that the battery gets completely discharged to the point your pda does not work anymore. This should be done at least once a month. The battery should be put through at least 2 cycles of such discharging and charging.


 
 


 

Ni-Cad and NiMH batteries are susceptible to memory effects, and these types of batteries need to be put through the cycles of complete discharge and charge as mentioned above. The memory effect is basically the phenomenon where the battery remembers the charge left in it when put on charging. This does not allow the battery to get fully charged. On the other hand, Li-Ion and Li-Polymer batteries should not be discharged completely, and if done the battery cells may get damaged beyond recovery.

How do I conserve my pda battery energy?

Here are some tips which you could follow to conserve energy of your pda battery:

 

  • You do not need the back light of your pda too often. So, use the automatic turnoff feature in your pda.
  • You need to turn down the volume, and also turn off completely that extra sound, like, your key sounds and screen taps. If you want to keep on the sounds for notifications, use the shorter sound.
  • Enhanced contrast draws a lot of current. Turn down your contrast to the minimum viewing level.
  • You should take out any PC card or compact flash unit, and put them in as and when you use them.
  • You should shorten the time which your pda takes in going into sleeping mode.
  • Minimize the use of the infra red or the serial communication. Both of these two features require power.

What are the signs that my pda batter is reaching end of life?

When your pda battery reaches the end of its life time, you will find that it is taking less time to charge than usual. For example, the battery that would have taken 5 to 6 hours to charge, now takes 2 to 3 hours to apparently get into full charge. At times you will find that your pda would not operate even after you have charged the battery over-night. The picture in the screen would slowly die out when you switch on your pda.
